What to Know About Your Eyes and Eye Care After Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery can restore clearer, brighter vision — but what happens next is just as important as the procedure itself. At Nelspruit Eyewear in Nelspruit, we believe that understanding proper post-surgery care helps protect your results and supports comfortable healing.

What Happens After Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery replaces the cloudy natural lens with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Most people notice improved vision within a few days, though full healing typically takes four to eight weeks.

It is common to experience temporary symptoms such as:

  • Mild blur or fluctuating vision
  • A gritty or scratchy sensation
  • Watery or dry eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Mild redness

These usually improve as the eye settles. Your surgeon may prescribe antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops — using them exactly as directed is one of the most important parts of recovery.

Key Do's and Don'ts for a Smooth Recovery

Following the correct aftercare instructions can help your eyes heal comfortably and reduce the risk of complications.

✓ What You Should Do

  • Use all prescribed eye drops on schedule. Wash your hands first and avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye.
  • Wear the protective eye shield at night for the first week, or as advised, to prevent accidental rubbing while sleeping.
  • Wear sunglasses outdoors if light feels brighter than usual.
  • Rest for the first two to three days and resume light activities such as reading, watching TV or gentle walking when comfortable.
  • Attend all follow-up appointments so your eye can be monitored.
  • Clean around the eye gently with cooled, boiled water and clean cotton wool if needed, following your surgeon's instructions.

✕ What You Should Avoid

  • Rub, press or touch the operated eye.
  • Get soap, shampoo or tap water directly in the eye for the first week or two.
  • Bend over with your head below waist level, lift heavy objects or do strenuous exercise in the early days.
  • Swim, use hot tubs or saunas for at least four to six weeks, or until your surgeon advises it is safe.
  • Wear eye makeup for about four weeks, or as advised.
  • Drive until your vision meets legal requirements and your eye-care professional clears you.

When to Seek Help Urgently

Contact your surgeon or seek medical attention straight away if you notice:

  • Severe or increasing pain
  • Sudden worsening of vision
  • Increasing redness or swelling
  • Yellow or green discharge
  • New flashes of light, a sudden shower of floaters, or a dark curtain or shadow across your vision.

These can signal rare but serious complications that need prompt attention.

Vision Changes and New Glasses

Your vision often continues to settle for several weeks. Many people need a new glasses prescription once the eye has stabilised — typically around four to six weeks after surgery.

Some residual refractive error, dryness or mild glare and halos can occur and are usually manageable.

In a minority of cases, posterior capsule opacification (sometimes called a "secondary cataract") can develop later and is commonly treated with a brief laser procedure.

Remember: Regular eye examinations remain important after cataract surgery. The procedure does not prevent other age-related conditions such as glaucoma, macular changes or dry eye from developing.
